Moving to Maui with your pet
Being a pet lover myself, I understand all the people that move to Maui and bring their pets. Hawaii doesn't have rabies so it has a stringent rules about bringing dogs and cats into the state. Dogs and cats meeting pre and post arrival may qualify for a 5 day or less quarantine program, here is the checklist that would need to be completed before your pet would qualify.
- Pet has been vacinated for rabies twice in it's lifetime.
- Pet had an electronic microchip implanted in it.
- Pet has had rabies blood test before arriving on Maui. (pet may not arrive on Maui less than 120 days after blood test results and not more than 3 years later)
- Direct release is typically done at the Honolulu International Airport HNL, but you can apply for a direct release at Kahului Airport OGG more than 30 days prior to arrival. Here is the checklist for direct release of your pet in the Kahului Airport
Any dogs or cats not meeting the 5 day or less program will be quarantined for up to 120 days. If you have a kitten or puppy, they also have to go through the rigorous Hawaii animal quarantine laws.
It can be a challenge finding a rental on Maui that allow pets. Many Maui homeowners have had bad experiences with pets in their rentals and are now more cautious about allowing pets, but there are some homeowners that will rent to tenants with pets.
