Lahaina is a small town with a big history on the western side of Maui. This oceanfront town was once the residence of Maui's highest cheifs and the first capital of the Kingdom of Hawaii. Lele was the ancient name for Lahaina and Europeen explorers described it as the Venice of the Pacific. Water used to flow from the West Maui mountains down through Lahaina in canals offering all the residents water. Durring the whaling era Lahaina was a hub for the whalers to take a rest and it became a lawless town with drunken sailers. You can still visit the legendary prison on Prison Street where many of these sailors would be housed until they sobered up. Lahaina is the home of Lahainaluna School, it was built in 1831 and was the first secondary school west of the Rockies. The 20th century was the plantation era in Maui and the Pioneer Mill was built, much of the western side of Maui was used for cultivating sugar cane. Even though the Pioneer Mill was tore down a number of years ago, they left the landmark smokestack. The Pioneer Hotel was built and remained the ony place to stay in Lahaina unit the 1960's when Lahaina condos began to be developed. Condos in Lahaina consist of leasehold and fee simple Lahaina condos and are all within walking distance to Front Street where there are unique shops, art galleries and restaurants. Many Lahaina condos are either oceanfront or oceanview and near Lahaina beaches. When staying in a Lahaina oceanview condo you will be able to view the whales durring the winter months and the Lahaina boats coming and going from Lahaina Harbor. While staying in a Lahaina condo you will be a short drive to the championship golf courses of Kaanapali and Kapalua.
